MJ - that is incredible. First time I've ever heard of moving the engine over with the fan used as a "hand crank." I may give that a try myself. And, it makes perfect sense, particularly if the plugs are out and there is no compression. Thanks for that - - However, I am wondering about one comment you made, and it's fine with me since the owner is the one who has to be satisfied, yet you say there have been no "ill effects (from not using the timing light)," and that you "just know when it's right." My question is, how do you know? And, if it wasn't important to set the timing accurately, why do we do it? First, I suspect you are right, and I bet you're close, maybe even dead on. I've been able to get real close before by ear, but only when I've been able to "hear it dead on first." Otherwise, I've been really fooled before, since it doesn't always sound best at idle when it is set on specs. But I have a friendly challenge for you and we can do it on the "honors system" if you want to play. Why don't you set the timing by ear just as closely as you think you can to TDC, and then borrow a timing light and check it? - - and come back and tell us how close you were. Here's the deal. If you're within 2 degrees either way at 450 rpm, I'll take my hat off in public. If you're more than 2 degrees off, you can. Are we on? RKS
