This is all good advice. I like to do things as simple as I can. To set the camlobe at tdc. I just push on the fanbelt and bring the engine up to tdc with the fan blade. I find tdc by shoving a small screw driver down the spark #1 plug hole. If you are too rough with the fan blade, this is not a recommended method. If you are gentle, it works not too bad.I've owned my H for twenty years now with no ill effects using this method. As far as timing is concerned, my H has always started as long as the points are set anywhere close. I don't have a dwell meter or timing light. If you have too much advance, the engine doesn't crank too well, not enough and it seems the motor is lazy. There's quite a variation in idle quality when you shift the timing. You just know when you've got it right especially if you have a good load for the tractor. Properly tuned, the "H" will lug right down to a heart beat although this is not recommended. The "H" is built to work and for a small gas tractor, they really are good performers. I can pull a baler and wagon loaded with 200 bales just about any where in low gear. This will haul the rpm's down especially on a grade!
