MJ - you can lay hands on a timing light that just uses the spark energy for the strobe (no battery required) - and you can use a battery in a vehicle that you just park close to the tractor, like jumping the battery. Also, it really doesn't matter much, but the spark occurs as the points "open," and lose the ground for the primary winding, not as they close - which begins to charge the coil primary and the condenser.
