I use a cheapo timing light I bought at a discount store with both 6 and 12 volt systems. Only difference is the flash isn't quite as bright on 6 volts. Use it inside and rub something white in the notches. I really couldn't hear any difference with the timing five degrees either way, but the tractor does have more power and starts easier when its exactly right (this afternoon after a few too many hours in the sun I started it in third gear with a baler and loaded wagon hitched on behind. Then I turned it off and took a break...).
