Proper readings on a cub ammeter

I haven't operated a cub since the 60's and now have one again. I need to know how to read my ammeter. When running, the needle stays on zero. With lights on dim, I get about 1-2 amps charge. On bright, I get about 6 amps positive charge. I get no discharge indication. What should I see? (Std 6 Volt magneto system.)
