What justin said sounds very familiar. I just got done dealing with that same problem. My "v-groove" turned out to be not one, but two old seals in the square groove. I spent about 30 minutes with a good stout dental pick and an X-Acto knife digging them out. New seal fits like it was made for it. Your new seal should be rectangular cross section, about .090x.150, with the .150 being the height.
