Some alternators have a diode built in to keep the battery from draining through the alernator when the ignition is turned off, others don't. If you have a multimeter, see if there's any current running through the wire from ignition to alternator with the switch turned off. If so you need the diode (or to replace the one you have, or to connect the alternator to the ignition switch so it can charge the battery).
