I agree with Tom as to the fault. An alternator requires exciter voltage to enable the alternator to charge. The diode is suppose to prevent the battery from discharging through this path during periods of disuse. Rarely does this work as good as the engineers planned for it to. An easy fix if the buy one on those $5 disconnects that fits on a battery post. Car enthusist use them on stored cars to prevent discharge as well as to reduce fire hazards. All one does is loosen the knob and the circuit is broken. Another fix is to just take to a battery cable off when you are not using the tractor.
