The way you describe it, it sounds like someone put the front wheels in a hole and snapped off the wheels and whatever else came along, usually part of the engine block. Not an unusual occurance, especially in ground hog country. Depending on how good a welding job was done, depends on how much oil will leak. The oil at this point should be only crankcase oil unless it is leaking around the shaft, not good, even if it does leak mostly on the ground, since you don't want that oil in the crankcase. There used to be kits available to rebuild, and I think you can get rebuilt pumps. There are some O-rings on the connections to the piping that have to be there or it will leak, speaking from experience.
