SAE 30 is the way to go on these old "lift-all" or "belly-pump" systems. The place to pour in the oil is on top of the housing, in front of the belt pulley drive. There should be a cast iron cap on the top of a pipe leading straight down into the hydraulic pump. As to how much oil.....at one time your tractor probably had a dipstick under this cap, but most of them seem to have been lost, thrown away, or dropped into the pump reservoir. A few weeks ago there was a post on this and advice on making a new dipstick from heavy wire with info on where to mark it. I don't think you can judge the oil level in the reservoir adequately by checking the outlet ports, which are the elbowed pipes on the sides of the tractor below the belt pulley. I've got an M with a loader and a 3pt hitch on it. When it doesn't lift, I just pour in another quart of oil! It's possible to plumb in a gauge to one of the outlet ports and check the pressure you're getting. Pressure may vary widely with pump condition, whether someone has fiddled with the relief spring during a re-build, and (as you have suspected) oil level. With a strong pump, you'll be pleasantly surpised what it will lift! Good luck!
