Ed, if you have a D-312 engine in your 686, it has no connection with the D-282 engine. I say this because there were actully 2 different engines used in the 686s. Early ones used the D-312, newer ones used the D-310 engine, which is basiclly the same engine as the later 706s used, the "German Diesel", which also was the D-310 engine. The D-312 engine is actually a "small block" version of the 400 Series IHs(414s,436s,466s used in 66,86,88 Series IHs). If you park your 686 beside, say a 1086, you will notice the 2 engines look quite similar, just that your D-312 is smaller in proportion in most areas. The 2 oil filters, intake & exhaust manifolds, injection pump mounting, oil cooler mounting, crankshaft mounted oil pump, etc. are shared between the 2 engines. As far as the HP & RPM are concerned, consider this. Like it or not, the rear end in your 686 is pretty much traced back to the venerable "M". The 65hp is pretty much the limit for this rear end(ask old IH guys about the 560s when they first came & you will hear some real horror stories.)
