Super A floading or something?!?!

Lastnight I was mowing when it sounded like the engine was bogging & then surging and I started loosing power. I kicked in the clucth & the engine was running very rough.(surging alot) It flooded and shut down. I managed to get it started & off the hill it was on. It seemed fine after a bit. So I went back to work. Same thing, but this time I had to get the truck & pull it up the hill to the house. It runs fine most of the time. I can not get it to do it without the mower deck engaged. It seems to dislike much of a load for a sustained period of time. I am not sure what is wrong, but Ideas will help me get started.
