John, the best thing you can do is go to one of the book vendors on this site, or Scott Satterlund at Binder Books (do a web search) or even your Case-IH dealer, and get an operator's manual for your tractor. Layout of all H's is similar enough that the year won't be critical. Read it thoroughly, and you will get answers to most of your questions. Happy tractoring, and BE CAREFUL! Tractors are not toys, and OSHA wasn't around in 1944, so it hasn't been idiot-proofed.
