Frustrating isn't it! I recently purchased a set of springs (aftermarket) for my 39 A. I kept the original seat. I have the exact same problem you describe. What to do? I have had several friends look at it and the only fix we can see is to heat and bend (slightly)the seats rod that should drop
into the latch. I thought this would be an easy start to restoration! Not only were the springs slightly off... they were also painted a color (off-red/orange) that I'm sure doesn't match any tractor ever made!
