Rick,
I have a '50 Cub which has been welded in the same area. I also have been told it is a very common problem on them. It does not seem to have affected the water jacket on mine and it was much more than a inch crack by the looks of the weld someone put on it. If the price is right I wouldn't be to afraid of buying it.
