cub not charging

well, i made the plunge (and my wife is still talking to me!)
i bought a '49 cub that needs some work but i knew that when i bought it.
maybe some of you more experienced owners can help me out. i'd certainly appreciate it.
my first problem is that the cub is running off the battery - the generator and voltage regulator don't seem to be working - what is the first thing i should check? (the gen has two wires coming out of it and the reg has 4 connections and a ground.)
also - what weight oil should go into the steering gear box and how much?
