I switched my tractor (400 W gas)over to a 12 volt battery and coil. The machine runs fine but when I changed the generator to a 12 volt (I got one from an old IH combine) I ran into trouble. The meter showed it was constantly charging. Eventually the tractor started running rough and misfiring. When I checked the points they were burnt off. What happened? I replaced the points and removed the generator and the tractor runs fine (I only have to put a charger on the battery.) Could the charge have burned the points? What's the solution? I've heard that Delco alternators are the way to go. How do I attach wires, test, etc.?
