I read your post closely and I was unable to determine what you did for the regulator. Definitely you need to add a 1.4 to 1.6 ohm ballast resistor. This can be purchased at any auto supply store for a few bucks. Place the resistor in series with the wire from the switch to the coil. The resistor should correct the point problem but you still have a charging fault.
