Jack, I have repaired several that were loose in that spline area. I wouldn't recommend welding, due to the possibility (probability) of warpage. One was so loose that there was no way to be sure the worm wheel would be centered. I carefully machined reference surface on each part and made a thin bushing to fit between to locate them concentrically. Then with both parts well cleaned, I permanently bonded them together with J B Weld. Another that was loose, but wasn't as bad, I bonded directly. Try it...I'm sure you will be pleased with the results. J B Weld was made just for this purpose. Oh...take care adjusting the vertical play out of the worm shaft too using the nut on the bottom before clamping the arm. Send us a report when you have it finished...it will give others hope.
