Farmall M Rear Axle Outer Bearing Metal Seals

When I removed the rear axle outer bearing caps from my M, I noticed a metal seal on the bearings between the rubber shaft seal and the bearing itself. One seal seemed to be pretty dinged up, like it was attached to the bearing and came loose. The other seal appeared to be in good shape and was free-floating on the axle shaft. What is the story on these metal seals? Are they part of the outer axle bearing? Do they need to be replaced or can they be eliminated?
