Dick, I hear ya with this problem. The marks have to be there and maybe you just haven't had enough light to see them yet. (Yes the lifters on #1 cycl. should be all the way down when #1 is at TDC on compression stroke). Use brake Kleen to clean the face of the gears and look for either small round punch marks or small hyphens like - -as my Super C had. The marks will be right at the base of the notch between the teeth or on the tooth itself. If all else fails use the side of a piece of childs chaulk and do sort of a pencil shading on the face of the gears. That may bring out the marks.//FB
