Hey KB - here's a quick check: Attach one multimeter probe to each battery terminal, set the meter to DC volts and note the reading. Assuming your 240 is 12 volt, the meter should show around 12.4 volts (give or take a bit depending on temperature and state of battery charge). Now start the motor and run it at maximum RPM. If the meter now reads 14.0 - 15.0 volts, you are all set. If the reading's same or lower than when the motor was off, the charging system is not working. If it's somewhere in between, the system is working, but not well. Note: If your tractor is 6 volt, divide all voltage readings above by 2. I highly recommend replacing the ammeter! A working ammeter is an excellent diagnostic tool, is cheap to buy and takes only a few minutes to swap out. Post back what you find...
