Curt, oil technology has really moved forward since the 40s and 50s. You can use any of the multi-weights and they work fine. The new synthetics and synthetic blends work great also. If you live in cold climates, use a 5w 30 when it gets cold. It will flow much better on a cold morning and then thicken up as the engine warms up.
