Replacing the belts on an H usually are fairly simple. Both the pulleys on the water pump and generator have sheves (split drive pulley halves) that tighten the belts by adjusting the front half of the pulley. There should be set screws or bolts that "set" the shev on the shaft. These are SUPPOSED to have a lock nut on them that has to be loosened first, before you can back the set screw out. (The originals on my '44 H were a slot screw, not a hex, like "modern" set screws.) You'll be able to see the "splits" on the shaft where the set screws have to be alligned. Loosen the set screws & loosen the shev all the way, take the belt off the bottom pulley and then the top. Generator works the same way, but take it off the generator first. There are square lugs on the water pump pulley that takes a spanner wrench, but most farmers used a punch to move it & the generator shev has holes, also took a special wrench, I think, but was generally "punched" too. BUT...it'll probably take a LOT of PATIENCE and PB BLASTER (not necessarily in that order) to get them loose. Be carefull when you loosen them - I broke the front shev on my H's water pump a coulple of years ago when I was tightening the fan belt. The shev was available from C-IH, but was more than $50.00 & had to take the radiator off to get at it. AND as long as I was that far into it, I boiled the rad, put a kit in the water pump & had a couple of hundred bucks into it before I was done. Be sure to check to make sure the shev wasn't welded to the shaft-this was a common fix for a front shev that was allowed to run loose and ruin the threads. If its welded, you'll just have to "fight" the belt off & on (not fun-one of my H's is this way). Good luck, have fun & be careful, those fan blades can give you a nasty cut as you fight the belts over 'em. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
