It sounds like you have a generator that uses an external field ground. To motor the generator correctly, connect a jumper from the F terminal to the frame and connect your battery to the A terminal and the frame. If you do this with the same polarity as the tractor battery, the generator will be correctly polarized. With the generator connected and running, grounding the F terminal will bypass the regulator and give full output. Be sure you have the right regulator!!
