You're on the right track, Don. Go ahead and change the oil, and get religious about shutting off the fuel line when you put the tractor away. If you accumulate more gas in the pan, then I'd check the carburetor float. Things to look for there would include simple adjustment, wear on the pivot/hinge pin that allows it to stick(a rebuild kit takes care of that), or pinholes that would cause it to fill up with gas and not float(a part and a rebuild while you've got it off and apart anyway). I'm a little leery of starting off another oil controversy, but any of the name brands of oil of the appropriate weight for the weather will do fine (everybody has their own reasons for their own favorite). The biggest controversy seems to surround detergent vs. non. IF the tractor has been run on detergent oil or has been fairly recently rebuilt, a detergent oil is the way to go. If it's been run and not well-maintained, or is old enough to have run a long number of years on non-detergent, you need to be more careful using detergent oils. You don't want to break up a clump of hardened sludge that could clog things up. When I first took the cover off my SUperC, the rocker arm looked like somebody had used about three pounds of Iron Cement to smooth out all the angles! As a rhetorical question, I'd be interested to see if anyone wants to jump in with an opinion as to whether one would be all right to clean the pan to get the bulk of gunk out, and then undertake a program of mixing same-brand oils, say 1/4 or 1/3 detergent with the rest non, with the idea that it would suspend the crud gradually. Change more frequently than you might otherwise, and gradually increase until you're using straight detergent oil. Any thoughts on that guys? Scotty

One of the great things about working on a tractor engine with your other half is that you know what he is thinking of at all times and can anticipate his every move and his next thought of what he will do. With Ben, anyway, I can tell! He'll be busy working and I’m handing him tools and he says, "give me that..." and I’ve already got it in his hand or "hand me that....."and I’ve got the portable light right where he needed it placed to see. "Run in the house and get me a...."as I open th
