I had a similiar problem with my 300. I had the carb. off twice but still ran rich and blew flame out the exhaust when shut down. I was having trouble with starting due to having a battery ignition on it and when the battery got just a little run down the tractor would not start. I went out, found a mag for it and while changing to the mag found that the distributor wasn't timed right. It was firing late. I timed the mag properly and now for the first time since I've owned it, it actually sounds like a Farmall. It still is runnng a bit on the rich side but now when I shut it down I no longer get the earth shattering KABOOM.
