To start, push the starting switch over lever forward and the diesel speed control lever to shut off. Pull out the choke and hit the starter. She should start on gas after a rev or two. Let warm for 2 or 3 minutes, depending on the temp. You may have to fiddle with the choke some. When revs start to increase on gas mode, it is ready to switch to diesel. Simultaneously pull back the starting switch over lever to diesel position and advance the diesel speed control to full speed. If it's warm enough to run on diesel, you'll get some smoke and then it will settle down and you are ready to work. To shut down, make sure it idles a while to let things cool. Then switch back to gas by pushing the start lever forward and pushing the diesel speed control lever down to shut off. Then shut the gas off under the gas tank and let it run on gas until it dies due to lack of gas. Then (VERY IMPORTANT) pull the start lever back to diesel position. The decompression valves need to be closed so they can cool on their seats and avoid warping. Ralph mentioned an electrical switch. My 1947 MD has none. Maybe the newer 1952 model is different. The magneto ground out switch is in a chamber in the manifold and is opened to activate the magneto when you push the start lever forward to gas position. Good luck, you'll like your MD.
