I'd recommend keeping the magneto. You can get it rebuilt if it has problems. You can convert the magneto to work as a battery ignition, but would be better to find a salvage yard and get a battery ignition there and change the whole thing. With the magneto, you don't need a battery to run. If you don't use the tractor a lot and have trouble keeping the battery charged, that is an advantage. You can use a battery pack (or a pull start) to get it going and you don't need a battery unless you want to use the lights.
