Fired her up on Saturday after the overhaul. After several miles up and down the farm-to-market road at various rpm's, she smoothed out very nicely at normal 'RUN' on the temperature. Part way down the road she started with a repetitive grinding and squeal, and of course the palms became immediately cold and sweaty in 100 degree heat. The fear faded when I determined that the fan belt was slipping on the crankshaft pulley. A noise in the area of a crankshaft will get your attention real fast. I never noticed that fan and generator hub assembly had been tightend against pulley with several loops of bailing wire. Evidently the nut to tighten the belt had been maxed out. Now I need to pull a functional water pump fan assembly (54 148 DA) from a parts tractor. The slippage doesn't raise the temperature that I can tell. Thanks to BKen and the Red on break-in's.
