Well, I took the advice of several of you on the board and realized that my 1939 M came from the factory with steel wheels, which meant that 5th was locked out on the tractor. So, I removed the light pedestal, and removed the gas tank to get to the bolt that is directly in front of the shifter on the transmission deck. Well, it had not been touched in 62 years. I mean, I had to use a cold chisel to remove all the dirt, rust, and other debris that had settled into the recessed area around the bolt. I finally got to where I could feel metal, but; there was a big problem. Instead of having a nice hex shaped bolt head, there was nothing more than a rounded over chunk of metal there. Damn, so, I decided to use the cold chisel and a hammer to apply pressure on the right hand of the bolt and use the chisel like a screwdriver to remove the bolt....Eureka, I couldn't believe my eyes when the bolt started to move, but here's a picture of the dang stubborn ol gal. I guess sitting in a hole for 63 years without seeing sunlight just let the bolt erode away to nothing, I'm lucky that I got the bolt out, and when I did, the tractor slipped right into 5th gear for the first time in her entire life. WOW, what a feeling!! Could someone tell me again, how long of a bolt I should put back in the hole?? I think a 1" or a 3/4" long bolt would work. Thanks for your help.
