It is indeed possible to reverse the ground polarity by simply swapping the battery cables and doing nothing else. The tractor will still start and run fine.
But if the generator is not re-polarized the battery will not be charged. Further it will likely burn out the voltage regulator – also possibly the generator. Nor will reversing ground polarity have any effect on the battery running down when the engine is shut down.
Swapping your W6 back to positive ground will have no effect on cranking speed. If that's a problem first be looking for bad (corroded) or undersized battery cables. (Cables should be at least 1/0 with SOLDERED terminals). If the cables are good then check the starter for worn brushes, bad commutator, dry bearings, etc. Also check and replace the starter switch if necessary.
