You can perform this job without removing the cover. I replaced the bull pinion brgs. on my M last December. Go in through the pto. I had to use heavy wire from the bull gear back a pto cover bolt to hold the bull gear back far enough to get clearance to pull the pinion cage out. The key thing no one seems to mention is that there is an oil (lube) feed passage and a cast ledge inside the case(lines up with a hole in the cage). I found my passages chuck full of metal particles from my previously decimated brgs. I used a telescoping magnet to remove the big stuff, and put a length of very small diameter windshield washer tubing on the end of the straw in a can of electrical motor cleaner with a rag to rinse out this oil feed passage. If you don't perform this little task, your very expensive brgs.($75.00 ea.) will be destroyed in very short order. Good Luck.
