Chek the new ring in the ring grove for side clearance of between .0025 and .004 And then place the ring in the bore and check the end gap at about half way down and it should be some where between .010 and .020 , AS far as why the ring broke it is had to say if every thing check out with in spec. then i would get a ball hone and just skuff up the bores and wash them out with hot soapy water in a strong mix and scrub till you see the cyl. start to rust then it is clean , blow dry and coat with engine oil and install the piston or pistons and if the bearings do not show to much ware then use them over . It's your money and i can be real cheep if i have to . Just make sure that the timing is to spec for that engine weather it is a 263 or a 291 you never did say. TV.
