A thread on the JD board several months ago pointed out the necessity of mixing the anti-freeeze and water BEFORE adding to the system when there is no pump. Apparently the difference in density between water and anti-freeze inhibits the thermosiphon effect and can result in overheating. Pre-mix and everything works as it should.
