A question about filling the lift-all

Here is perhaps a dumb question about putting oil in the lift-all of my '44 H. I, like many others I've noticed, am missing the lift-all dipstick and so am never sure if I have the correct amount of oil in it. I've delt with the problem by draining the system and refilling with the recommended six quarts about twice a year. My question is, should the cylinders be fully up, fully down, or does it even matter, when I empty and refill the reservoir? Thanks in advance.
