Hugh - Now recall your "switch left on" incident - same thing's happened to me a couple times... Anyway here's a few thoughts/tips on your situation: 1 - The ammeter should read 0 with everything off, and -4 or -5 with the ign switch on and the engine stopped. If you are reading +5 with the switch on and motor stopped, the ammeter is wired for positive ground and is reading backward. Swap the wires to the two ammeter connections so it will read correctly. 2 - With the motor stopped, you should read battery voltage between the alternator BAT term and ground, also the alt #2 terminal and ground. The #1 terminal should read 0 with the ign switch off. #1 may show perhaps few tenths of a volt with the switch on. 3 - With the motor running and the alternator charging, you should again read battery voltage at BAT and #2. You should see a very low voltage (a couple volts max) at #1. 4 - Recall that upon startup the Delco alternator must be "spun up" to a speed higher than normal idle to turn on the regulator and start it charging. You can tell when this happens because the warning light will go out, the system voltage will jump to 14+ volts and the ammeter will deflect hard to the charge side. So after starting the motor, run it briefly up to full RPM before performing any tests! 5 - NEVER NEVER NEVER disconnect the battery cable on an alternator-equipped machine with the motor running! Alternators can self-destruct instantly under an an open circuit condition like this - maybe this happened to yours?? Hope this helps... Email me offline if you continue to have problems. ...Bob M
