super c ignition coil question--please help

i recently got a brand new coil for my super c.The coil has 2 posts-1 marked positive & 1 marked negative. Which wire do i hook to which post? i have tried it both ways & it seems to run both ways,but it gets very hot either way (can hardly hold your hand on it). is this normal? my tractor has a 6 volt ,positive ground system. the new coil package says it is 6-volt & for some 12-volt. Any help would be appreciated.
