Can only answer one of your questions. Our 1256 is rated at I think 115 horses and we did all the field work in 1st or 2nd in high range. Usually pulling a 28 foot vibra shank or 24 foot anhydrous applicator. Even the 28 foot hoe drills a couple of times. You shouldn't have any problem using high range and 1st gear with TA in high. Don't bother fixing those gears because you probably won't get your money back out of it.
