Ok, I bought this tractor at auction for $3,500 to do some harrowing on land I have cleared. The low range and reverse gears both knock (probably a chipped gear tooth). All foward gears in high range are fine. Also, torgue amplifier does not work. Good news is that the motor is very strong, the hydraulics and pto are good and even all the electricals (even the swamp cooler!) work. Now for the questions: 1) Will this beast do what I want it to do (offset harrow, 3 or maybe 7 bottom turning plow over newly cleared land with a lot of small, 1-2", trees, roots, etc... that my loader missed) in high range low gear?
2) Is it worth putting the ~$2,000 into it to replace the torque amp. and, presumably, chipped gears? I plan to eventually sell it and I'd then have ~ $5,500 in it. The injector pump leaks a bit at the fuel lines and I have replaced the banjo gaskets with original spec. washers and stopped all but one. One continues to leak even after much tightening.
3) Any suggestions about what to try next? The exhaust stack was jury rigged and fell off after I brushed it against ~ 1/2" branch. The manifold stack O.D. is 3 5/8" the only exhaust couplers I can find are 3 1/2 or 3 3/4". I've cut the splits on the 3 1/2 open so that it will fit and then welded a bit, but it still is far less than optimal.
4) Any suggestions as to how to get it right without buying a new exhaust from IH? Big Bucks!!!! 5) Is it possible to get an adjustable center bar for the 3 pt. hitch (56 " and class 2, I think) for less than $250?
Thanks for any responses

Pitfalls of Tractor Engine Rebuilds - by Chris Pratt. The first pop after you have put the machine together with your own hands is exciting and pleasing. The whole experience can be marred if one moves too fast and makes too many assumptions that they can just use "as is" some parts they should be closely scrutinizing and possibly attended to. In such cases, rework makes what could have been a fun project turn into an irritant or even a nightmare. Minor Irritants To give you an example of an minor but irritating proble
