Cooking on top of my H. Thermostat or Water Pump? Help!

Hey all, First of all, I did read through 740 posts from the archives, and found them helpful, but my question is a little different than those discussed previously (perhaps a lot simpler too). My '40 H is clearly overheating. Even idling for 10 min at half throttle, the radiator starts to steam - boiling hot. The fan blade spins, both the generator and water pump belts turn so at least I know the water pump isn't seized (right?) While running, I looked into the open radiator top to notice that there is no water movement that is visible... So here's the question: is there an easy way to tell if it's the water pump, or the thermostat without tearing it apart? Some folks made reference to overheating if the timing is off, but the H purrs like a kitten, so I doubt it's the timing... Any help would be greatly appreciated Pete in PA
