Brian: I don't like white smoke in your question #2. White often relates to water turned to steam. Leaking head gasket? The mis under load is another poor thing to have. Many possible things. Bad plugs\points maybe. A plug takes more to fire when under higher pressure from a heavy load. A load often uncovers the faults in a weak system. But the smoke bothers me more. Black would have possibley been too rich fuel mixture. White is water. Popping in air filter could be burnt INTAKE valvue or mis adjusted valves. Many ytmag post talk about resetting valves. Easy to do cold non running. Try that? Too loose is better than too tight. Ya may consider retorque the head bolts just befor setting valves. Head gasket leaking water for that white smoke? I don't like that white smoke. G.
