M Farmall disc brakes

Took my disc brakes apart yesterday to clean and do necessary maintenance on them. I found a spring about 1/2 inch in diameter attached to the outer casting on both sides but it was not attached to anything at the other end. The brake activating mechanism is a Y shaped devise attached together by a 3/8 inch pin with a cotter key in it. The only thing I could figure out was that the spring was maybe once attached to the cotter pin. Does anyone know where the spring is supposed to be attached? Does it need to be attached and what does it do to the activating mechanism? Thanks in advance for any information. Jim
