Farmall A 12-volt convertion

I just completed a 12 volt convertion on my farmall A , everything seems to work good, the only problem is the ballast resistor that I installed gets very hot, is this normal?? I checked the voltage going in is 12 and going out to the coil is 6 volt. I used the Delco 10si one wire alternator and ran all new wire to everything. The ballast resistor is the only thing that has me puzzled. Why is it getting so hot???? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated thanks Jay
