IGNITION MADNESS

I'm working on a 48 Super A It has a magneto ignition. But the previous owner added a coil and a new ignition switch basically using the points of the mag like those of a regular distributor. This all worked fine until I screwed things up.
I put new points in the mag and in the process I screwed up the mag timing. I have followed the owners manual on retiming the mag but I can't seem to get it right.
I put #1 on TDC, align the rotor with #1 on the dist cap, but lugs on the mag do not align with the slots on the mount. What is wrong?
I managed to get everything aligned buy twisting the lug against the internal spring. Followed the rest of the instructions and still not right.
