Many years ago I needed to replace the water pump on my car. As I remember I had very little clearance between the water pump and the radiator. I wound up having to take the studs that held the fan out of the water pump to make room to remove it. I did this by turning on TWO nuts on each stud, tightening them to themselves. Then I unscrewed each stud by turning the inner most nut counterclockwise. Since that nut is locked tight against the top nut it turned out the stud. This method works great when reinstalling the studs, just turn the outer most nut clockwise. And the threads don't get messed up!
