Well, the outside looks like crud, but how does it run? A 5hp 20gal compressor with a portable sandblasting outfit will work nicely on sheet metal that you wouldn't use a $250 rental. Corners and curves that you couldn't reach with a brush are quickly cleaned. Other areas such as the engine are better cleaned with oven cleaner sprayed on very heavy. Memorial tractor resting places (salvage yards) would be a good source of rebuildable generators, but others can be found by trading with the board advertisers. Restorations are not cheap, but you are not doing this to make money anyway, I hope. If you do this on weekends like me, you may take 6 months to finish the project, and that way your treasure hunt for parts isn't one big hit to your wallet. The Red or Grodey have very entertaining web sites on their restorations.
