You can't really check transmission gears without driving it or disassembling it and doing an inspection. When you swap distributor with mag or vise versa you will need to time it with engine. Your best bet for the rust in gas would be to keep your sediment bowl cleaned out and there should also be a screen in the top of sediment bowl and one where the gas line goes into the carb. If tank is really rusty it should be cleaned and flushed out. The older H's had a tall oil filter and the newer ones had a shorter filter from the factory. I think this change accured in the later part of the 40's. Your H must be a newer model than the H's with the tall filter or someone has converted it. Some people felt that the 6v battery was a little weak. Especially the people up north that have longer colder winters. Some people slipped in an 8v battery to strengthen up the electrical system mainly for starting purposes. Not real sure if they had to do anything else to the system to convert. I think they could use the same lights and what not. Here in the later years I believe it has become more common to go on up to the 12v battery. There is quit a bit to do when converting to the 12 volt though. You have to basically rework the whole system to convert to 12 v. Good luck to ya.

Today's Featured Article - An Old-Time Tractor Demonstration - by Kim Pratt. Sam was born in rural Kansas in 1926. His dad was a hard-working farmer and the children worked hard everyday to help ends meet. In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership, ... [Read Article]
