My M did the same thing last fall plowing - ran great with the plow in the ground, ran like crap with the plow raised. Got it back to the house and started looking at the manifold. One side was missing a stud, another was stripped - resulted in the gasket on that side being completely gone. Fixed the studs, put on new gaskets and it ran great. Try pulling the choke out part way when your tractor is running bad. It it makes it run better but starts to smoke I would definitely look at the manifold.
