You can also choke the engine just as it dies and it will not run backwards.

Try to run something on you fuel to clean the carbon from the engine and you should fix the problem.

I hae one tractor that has doen this for years and I can't seem to get it to stop so I just use the choke and will suffer higher engine wear if I am washing the cylinders with gasoline but I hit the choke just as it dies and don't think I'm getting much gas in the engine.
